In a time not so long ago, the hum of saws and the scent of sawdust filled the air in Middle/High school shop classes across the nation. It was here, in one such class, that our journey began. A journey that led to the creation of FirstSkilled, born from the nostalgia of craftsmanship and a concern for the future.
The Vanishing Art:
As Middle/high school students, we discovered our passion and talent in woodworking/industrial shop classes. It was more than learning a skill; it was about shaping creativity, fostering problem-solving, and instilling a sense of accomplishment. But as the years passed, we watched with dismay as these classes began to vanish, a casualty of budget cuts and shifting educational priorities.
The Spark of FirstSkilled:
Noticing the growing gap in skilled trades and reflecting on my transformative experience in shop class, we envisioned FirstSkilled. It is a bold idea: to reintroduce skilled trades to our youth, not just as a curriculum but as a pathway to growth, leadership, and life readiness.
Building the Dream:
Establishing FirstSkilled was no easy feat. It involved endless days of planning, networking, and advocating for the value of skilled trades in modern education. We faced skepticism and logistical challenges, but the belief in the importance of hands-on learning drove us forward.
